Western Europe is a mountainous region. The Alpine mountain range covers a lot of Western Europe. The Alps provide a popular tourist destination for many people. Transportation in and out of the Alps is difficult and the Alps are a natural border that prevented migration. The North European Plain passes through many Western European countries. The North European Plain provides a lot of crops and is easy to navigate. This caused the plain to be a densely populated area of Europe.

Before World War I, the Western European region made of France, Germany and the Austria-Hungary Empire. After World War I, the Austria-Hungary Empire broke up. The small surrounding countries of Hungary, Czechslovakia, and Poland became independent. After Germany lost both World Wars, they lost part of their eastern borders to Poland.
